How Long Should I Wait After My Pet Dies to Communicate?

Is there a time frame to wait before communicating with a departed pet?

The answer is…no.

Time as we know it does not exist in the afterlife.

There are no clocks, no twenty-four-hour days in linear form as we have on Earth.

The souls of our companion animals are usually in a state of bliss the moment they leave their bodies. They are immediately infused with nourishing love from the afterlife.

They feel exhilarated and limitless. They launch into higher realms and receive energetic refueling. Most are ready and excited to communicate.

While some of our companions may want to explore their new environment which causes them to be a bit distracted at first, others are thrilled to share their love and gratitude right away.

For those of us left behind to mourn our loss, it is far more difficult as we struggle with grief. Bliss is nowhere on our horizon, just the overwhelming and agonizing pain.

There is one thing you can do that will benefit both of you.

Gather yourself quietly and send loving thoughts to your companion. Talk to them as if they were right by your side.

That loving energy goes out to them and fuels their journey.

Before you book a communication session, I recommend that you wait until you are emotionally calm. Tears are welcome, but you must be ready to receive any messages that come through.

Grief can cause mind-numbing pain to engulf us and that makes it difficult for messages to come through and very difficult for you to be open to receive. Grief makes it difficult to function on the simplest level. That heaviness can cause you to miss important messages from your angel. Your emotions may also interfere with the communicator as it causes static in the transmission of messages. Think about a cell phone call when you enter an area with a poor connection.

Our departed companions rarely focus on negative experiences so don’t be surprised to hear positive and uplifting messages.

Departed human souls may also be ready to communicate immediately upon leaving their bodies behind.

Some religious or spiritual beliefs honor a certain time before connecting to a soul so they can complete their journey and settle into their new dimension.

.

In my experience, most departed souls, both human and animal, are ready to connect with those they love right away and often send signs just before, during, or after they transition.

No two souls are alike or follow the same path. Those left behind are more likely to need time to ready to receive their messages.

Do whatever feels right to you. If your heart is telling you to wait then honor that. If you feel like reaching out, then schedule a session.

Remember, this is their journey too, and as much as you want to know they are okay and still with you, trust they are.

Send loving thoughts to them anytime. Your beloved companions especially love to hear you call to them by their nickname.

For the best results, bring calm and loving energy to your communication session.

Its going on 5 years Aug 25th of my micante crossing and not a day goes by that she’s not missed. Her spirit is the hawk she always stopped and watched them. I see hawks all the time. She also leaves me feathers. Her name means My heart in Lakota. My heart still hurts.

    • Karen Anderson says:

I’m so sorry Mary, even after many years the pain still lingers. I love that she sends you feathers and hawks! How wonderful! I’m sure she is right there by your side as there is nowhere else she would rather be.

We adopted senior labs for many years, and we lost 6 dogs in 5 years. 4 of them within 2 years. Now we have a young lab who I ADORE. But I’m still filled with grief for the loss of all of my older dogs.

Thank you for this, Karen. I just lost my boy Poobah 2 weeks ago. The first week was really painful but I started getting multiple signs from him 5 days after he passed. I immediately started researching the topic and came across your book, The Amazing Afterlife of Animals and it has completely changed my outlook on his passing. I welcome his signs and have been wanting to receive a message from him. I just didn’t know if it was too soon. Thank you again, I needed to hear this!

    • Karen Anderson says:

Hi Sandy, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved, Poobah. It warms my heart to know that my book has helped you shift your perspective and ease your pain. Thank you for reaching out! Be sure you make a big deal about the signs, ask for more, and continue to make his life more important than his death. Wishing you peace on your journey through grief.

Hi, sometimes we wonder about that question also pertaining to what if they reincarnate, will it be too late to communicate with their afterlife soul. But, I have heard that we still can even after reincarnation since it’s only a third of our consciousness that lives in the body and 2/3rds is back home in the spiritual realm.
    Thanks

    • Karen Anderson says:

In my experience, it is always possible to communicate with the soul whether or not they have reincarnated. I write about that in my book, The Amazing Afterlife of Animals.

  7. Hi Karen, there is a female Calico cat who has taken to me, my hubby and my fur baby Daisy, so we feed her everyday and set up sleeping quarters for her, she belongs to a neighbor, so we didn’t raise her we don’t chase her away, I buy her wet and dry cat food and snacks!!! We do like her a lot!!Could there be a reason as to why she stays at my home? I really hope that you will respond!!! Thanks Karen!!

    • Karen Anderson says:

I’ve heard many stories similar to yours. Cats will show up and become quite friendly and even ‘move-in’ while they still have another ‘family’. It could be that kitty is just lonely, or adventurous, or even a past life connection between you. She may be drawn to the energy of your home, your family, or Daisy too! So many possibilities!

  8. Hi Karen,
I really need help keeping my emotions calm and in check.I know everything you have said and have two of your books,
My name is Don Naffziger and I live in San Diego California and I have told you about My One And Only Angel Cat Grazee. I used to and still do every night sing our song to her:”your my one and only Angel Cat, your my one and only Grazee the cat!” and then I clap and tell her yeah Grazee your my little snicker snacker, your my baby girl, you’ll always be my baby girl and I love you always and forever! Then when her old mortal body was here I lie my head gently on her and she would lie down and start purring. I had read some where about cats in the wild in their packs they would rub against each other spreading their pheromones and that is their way of telling each other they belonged to each other. So we have probably one of the strongest bonds a human can have to a cat. She is here with me all the time or knows when i need a sign from her that she is still with me. I sometimes well a lot miss seeing her old mortal body and I start telling her how much I love her and miss her old body and being able to see her. And most of the time I still can’t control my emotions and I start crying. I’ll ask her to please give me a sign that she is here with me and I tell her I’m sorry to always ask her that but every time she gives me a sign and so obvious and right then in a matter of seconds the sign will be visible to me and one time she used my 83 year old mother whom I live with, my mother looked at me and said there’s Grazee and pointed over by the hallway to our kitchen and her bedroom and she said she just walked by! Why does it still hurt so bad inside of me and i tell myself all the time she is free and has no more pain etc.? She passed away and I held her in my arms while we said goodbye and the Veterinarian euthanized her, I kissed her little forehead when she left so peacefully. Please any suggestions on how to stop or ease the heart break or do I need too? I know you say to stay calm and not to grieve for to long and not to be overwhelmed with sorrow because they will feel like it’s their fault for your pain? I think about that every time I still get that way sometimes but I tell her that it’s not her fault that I get sad miss her so much and that I’m just a dummy who gets to emotional all the time.

I have a 16 year-old horse named Murphy who just started head shaking. We have tried everything to find out how to treat it; however, the diagnosis is very rare and nothing seems to help. I just retired and wanted more time to ride my gentle giant of a horse but the head shaking makes it dangerous. My mini donkey can tell he’s always hurting and she is very anxious about it. I really need some help. When I get done feeding, cleaning, and grooming them my horse walks away and I know he’s in tremendous pain. I keep asking God to help them but so far, nothing. If you could get me on your list it would be very helpful. I can’t stand the thought of having to put him down but I can’t stand to watch him suffer. Please help.

    • Karen Anderson says:

I’m so sorry to hear about your horse and donkey. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for you. What was your horse’s diagnosis? It sounds like EPM which affects the central nervous system. You can opt in on my VIP family to stay informed and get updates. https://bit.ly/3uuWVey Sending love and healing energy.

I lost 3 cats in 2 years due to cancer, kidney disease, pancreatic cancer. It’s been 4-5 years and I still cry over them. At night I can feel a movement at the bottom of the bed near my feet. I know it is either Mr Sweetie or Blue as they used to sleep with me. I miss all three of them every day.

    • Karen Anderson says:

I am so sorry Patricia. Losing one is so hard. I can’t imagine losing so many in a short time. My heart breaks for you. I’m so glad you have felt the on your bed! That is wonderful! You know there is nowhere else they would rather be than with you. I hope you have my book, The Amazing Afterlife of Animals. It will help you navigate through the grief.

    This is for Don Naffziger
Try the flower essence called Grief Relief. I have used it for myself and for my animal family. For me it helped to make the grief bearable and helped me to move through it.
    Love to you

When my cat Ally transitioned in 2011, it was extremely hard. She had been my source of comfort love and calm for years. We slept belly to belly with her arms around my neck and head tucked under my chin every night except in the summer when it was too hot.
She had been sick for months and my thoughts were to see what I could do for her, what remedies we’re working, etc. I connected with an animal communicator for quick 10-15 minute sessions to see how she was. I didn’t want her to stay one more minute than she was comfortable staying. One night we were lying I got bed and I knew it was our last night. The next day was New Years Eve.
I confirmed with the animal communicator the next morning.
She visited twice after she left (I can’t remember if it was the night she left or the next night) and is still there now, helping and watching out for me.
She is the cat of my life and I think of her every day and send her reiki.

    • Karen Anderson says:

I’m so sorry, Ellie, you must miss her so much. It sounds like you have an amazing bond with her.

  14. Helen Sparkes says:

    Hi Karen,
I read your book “The Amazing Afterlife of Animals” and found it to be very uplifting to learn that our precious pets are still with us.
I said goodbye to my beloved pet Bandit 9 months ago. It was a very difficult decision for me to make, although he was 15.5 years old, and having some health issues, I tried everything I could to try and make him comfortable and pain free as much as possible. You see, it was so hard for me to let him go, as he was my beloved companion and rock after my husband passed away suddenly 18 months beforehand.
My mind will not switch off at times that I could have maybe done better with medications etc., but then I realize I did everything I possibly could. I get very sad and miss them both very much. I was wondering if they are both together in the afterlife, I often dream about them, but not together, and pray often for signs.
Thank you Karen for reading my story, and I would be so grateful if you would give me so advise/suggestions to help me deal with he grieving of my Husband and Pet.

    • Karen Anderson says:

I am so sorry for your losses, Helen. I’m sure they are together in spirit and visit you often as there is nowhere else they would rather be. It sounds like you did the very best you could and that was exactly perfect. They know you come from a loving place in your heart to help them and be there for them and that is all that matters. I’m so glad my book has helped you during this difficult time. I recommend going back and reviewing it from time to time. Even when I read it through after it has been a while, I find things I forgot I wrote about! I wish I had a cure for your grief but unfortunately, there is no such thing. I recommend working with a licensed grief counselor and finding things to do that bring you joy. Write a letter to each of them and share your thoughts, your heartache, and your happiness. You can hold a celebration of their lives and read the letters to them. I’m sure they would love that. Be patient with yourself, grief, and the emotions we must endure take time to heal. Each day gets a little easier when we shift our focus to our special moments. While the pain is immeasurable so are the memories. I’m sure they would love to see you move through the pain and find your smile again. Only you can decide when you are ready to heal. I send blessings and prayers for healing.

  15. Ada says:

Karen, I enjoyed your book. I cried when I realized that my Bryce left some messages for me and I have you to thank. I would have never known. My husband has seen him and I haven’t. I did hear him whining one time but that was all. I miss him so much. I would love to see him and pet him again. My heart aches so much for him.
    Thank you.

    • Karen Anderson says:

      Hi Ada,
I am so very sorry for the loss of Bryce…you must miss him so much. I’m so glad my book helped you understand his messages! That is wonderful! So many people would do anything to hear their departed pets and that your husband saw him wow! That takes a LOT of energy! Invite Bryce to send more signs, then be really excited when you receive them! He will love that you noticed him. May you find peace in your heart again.

  16. Debbie Rendek says:

    Hi Karen,
After my sweet little bunny girl, Julie passed, I received many signs from her. I wasn’t sure of all I saw and what it meant until I read both of your books. I knew then what I was seeing was real and that animals could communicate to us just like humans after they pass. The night after she died I received a very clear vision of her in an open field with sunshine and her jumping around and doing binkies. At the end she couldn’t walk and lost sight in her good eye. For her to send me this, gave me so much joy knowing that she was a whole bunny again! If it wasn’t for your books I probably wouldn’t have understood why I saw this vision. Thank you, Karen! You are truly a blessing!

    • Karen Anderson says:

Your sweet angel, Julie is alive and well in spirit! I love that she showed you how complete and whole she is now. That is so precious. I’m so glad she guided you to me and that you have found peace and healing with my books and the messages from your girl.
